Privacy Policy - Smarter Library

Smarter Library is a private, local-first library and search application provided by Smarter Technologist. It works without an account or cloud AI. The app does not upload the user's files, notes, filenames, paths, search queries, prompts, answers, or generated results. A user may explicitly choose to send a report about generated output by email, as described below.

Sources and files

Smarter Library reads only sources the user explicitly enables, such as the Downloads connector or folders selected through Android's system picker. Access is revocable. The app catalogs files in place and does not copy, move, upload, or delete the original files.

Exclusions are applied before content is opened for extraction. Filenames, paths, content, hashes, and search queries are not written to app logs.

Information stored on the device

The catalog, notes, shelves, tags, saved views, search history, extracted text, thumbnails, and generated insights are stored locally. The catalog is encrypted at rest using SQLCipher. Android cloud backup and device transfer are disabled for the app's private data.

Local processing and AI

Extraction, search, OCR, speech transcription, translation, tagging, summaries, image understanding, and question answering run on the device. Speech transcription uses a local Whisper model. Other features may use app-managed local models, Android AICore, or optional Google ML Kit features. Model-generated information may be inaccurate and is identified as generated output rather than verified fact.

Google ML Kit and system services

ML Kit feature inputs and outputs are processed on the device. Under Google's published ML Kit terms, however, ML Kit may contact Google to obtain models, fixes, and hardware-accelerator compatibility information and may send limited device, app, performance, and utilization information for diagnostics and analytics. Smarter Library does not send user file or note content, filenames, paths, queries, prompts, answers, or generated results to Google for these features.

Google Play services, ML Kit, and AICore are operated by Google and may have system-owned network activity outside the app's control. For information about Google's handling of data, see the Google Privacy Policy.

Network access

The app starts network requests only for actions or options the user enables, including model or language-pack downloads and HTTPS images referenced by a document. Remote document images are off by default. Offline mode blocks new network requests started by Smarter Library, but cannot control Google Play services, ML Kit, or AICore system activity.

Google Play purchases

Google Play handles payment for the optional Pro purchase. Smarter Library does not receive or store payment-card details. It uses Google Play Billing only to confirm whether Pro is owned and to restore the purchase.

Backups

A library backup is created only after an explicit user action and is protected by a passphrase. Smarter Technologist has no backup server and cannot access or recover the backup. After export, the user and the selected document provider control the file's storage, retention, security, and deletion.

Advertising, analytics, and sharing

Smarter Library has no advertising SDK, account system, Smarter Technologist analytics service, crash-reporting service, cloud backend, or social feature. Smarter Technologist does not sell or rent user information. The limited Google operational data described above is the separate third-party boundary.

Reports about generated output

If the user flags generated output, the report is first stored only on the device. The user can then choose to open an email draft addressed to Smarter Technologist. That draft contains the reported generated output, the selected reason, and any note the user entered. Nothing is emailed automatically: the user can review, edit, discard, or send the draft in their email app. If sent, the email app and email providers involved process that information under their own privacy terms.

Retention and deletion

Local information remains until the user removes it, resets the catalog, clears the app's storage in Android settings, or uninstalls the app. Source access can be revoked in the app or Android settings. Smarter Technologist has no server copy to retain or delete.

Children's privacy

Smarter Library is not designed to collect personal information from children. Smarter Technologist does not receive user library content from the app.

Changes to this policy

If the app's data practices change, this policy and the in-app privacy disclosures will be updated before the changed behavior is released.
