Frequently Asked Questions

Browser Sync (Chrome Extension & Android App)

Learn more about Browser Sync on our Browser Sync feature page.

Prerequisites:

  • Android app installed and updated to the latest version
  • Chrome extension installed
  • The same Google account available on Android and Chrome

Setup Steps:

  1. Open the Smarter Bookmarks Android app
  2. Go to Settings → Browser Sync
  3. Enable Browser Sync using the toggle switch
  4. Sign in with your Google account (tap the email preference if not signed in)
  5. In the Chrome extension, sign in with the same Google account
  6. Run Sync Now from Android after updating from the old Browser Sync flow

Once set up, supported bookmark changes sync bidirectionally between Chrome and Android. Sync may be delayed by Chrome extension service workers or Android background limits.

Check the following in order:

  1. Google Sign-In: Ensure you're signed in with the same Google account in both the extension and Android app
  2. Browser Sync Enabled: Verify Browser Sync is enabled in the Android app settings
  3. Google Drive: Ensure Google Drive is available for the signed-in account
  4. Internet Connection: Ensure both devices have an active internet connection
  5. Sync Now: Run Sync Now from Android and then reopen the extension popup
  6. Refresh State: If you upgraded from the old flow, run Browser Sync once from Android to reconnect Chrome bookmarks and collections

If issues persist, contact support with details about which direction (Chrome to Android or Android to Chrome) is not working.

To disable Browser Sync:

  1. Open the Smarter Bookmarks Android app
  2. Go to Settings → Browser Sync
  3. Toggle off "Enable Browser Sync"

Note: Disabling sync will stop future synchronization but will not delete bookmarks already synced to your devices.

Yes! Browser Sync supports syncing between:

  • One Chrome browser and multiple Android devices
  • Multiple Chrome browsers and one Android device
  • Multiple Chrome browsers and multiple Android devices

All devices must use the same Google account for authentication.

Browser Sync stores encrypted sync data in your Google Drive app data. Bookmark sync payloads are encrypted before upload and are not transported through Smarter servers.

Data involved:

  • Bookmark URLs, titles, descriptions, notes, tags, and collection/folder structure where supported
  • Local sync state, cursors, and pending changes needed to keep devices aligned
  • Basic Google account information used for sign-in and account display

Browser Sync is out of beta and no longer requires Smarter Bookmarks Pro. The previous flow that used pairing codes and backend sync infrastructure has been retired.

After updating:

  • Update the Chrome extension
  • Open Smarter Bookmarks on Android
  • Open Settings → Browser Sync
  • Run Sync Now once to reconnect Chrome bookmarks and collections through Google Drive

Your existing bookmarks remain in Smarter Bookmarks. The update changes how Chrome and Android exchange sync data going forward.
