This Privacy Policy specifically covers the Browser Sync feature that enables bidirectional synchronization of bookmarks between the Smarter Bookmarks Chrome extension and the Smarter Bookmarks Android app. By using the Browser Sync feature, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

Information We Collect

  • Personally Identifiable Information: When you sign in using Google OAuth, your name, email address, and profile picture may be used to show your signed-in status in the extension or app interface.
  • Authentication Information: Google OAuth is used to authenticate your account and authorize access to Google Drive app data for Browser Sync.
  • Bookmark Data (Web History): To enable synchronization, Browser Sync processes bookmark information such as URLs, titles, descriptions, notes, tags, folder structure, and related metadata. Bookmark sync payloads are encrypted before upload to your Google Drive app data.
  • Website Content: We access bookmark URLs and titles, which are hyperlinks to websites. This information is used solely for synchronization purposes.
  • Device Information: Browser Sync stores local device and sync identifiers so Chrome and Android can track sync progress.

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information exclusively to provide the Browser Sync service:

  • Personally Identifiable Information: Your account display information is used solely to show signed-in status and identify the Google account used for Browser Sync.
  • Authentication Information: Your Google account is used to authenticate Browser Sync and access Google Drive app data.
  • Bookmark Data: Your bookmark information is used exclusively to synchronize bookmarks between your Chrome browser and Android device. We do not use bookmark data for advertising, analytics, or any other purpose.

Data Transmission and Storage

  • Security: Bookmark sync payloads are encrypted before upload and stored in your Google Drive app data. Smarter servers do not transport Browser Sync bookmark payloads in the current sync model.
  • Data Usage: We do not use your bookmark data for advertising, analytics, or any purpose other than facilitating synchronization. We do not sell, rent, or share your bookmark data with third parties.
  • Third-Party Services: We use Google services for OAuth authentication and Google Drive app data sync storage. These services are subject to Google's privacy policies.

Data Retention

  • Personally Identifiable Information: Account display information is stored locally where needed to show signed-in status and is cleared when you sign out.
  • Authentication Data: Authentication is handled through Google OAuth. Browser Sync keeps local auth state needed for the extension and app to access Google Drive app data.
  • Bookmark Data: Bookmark sync payloads are stored in your Google Drive app data for synchronization and are not stored on Smarter servers.
  • Reset: You can reset Browser Sync from the Android app to clear local sync state and remove Browser Sync files from Google Drive app data where supported.
  • Local Data: All bookmark data and personally identifiable information (name, profile picture) are stored locally on your Chrome browser and Android device, remaining under your control.

Your Rights and Controls

  • Enable/Disable Sync: You can enable or disable Browser Sync at any time through the Chrome extension settings or Android app settings.
  • Data Access: You can view all your synced bookmarks through the Chrome extension or Android app. Your name and profile picture displayed in the extension are from your Google account.
  • Data Deletion: You can delete individual bookmarks or collections, which will sync across your devices when Browser Sync runs. You can also reset Browser Sync to clear sync state.
  • Sign Out: Signing out clears local account display and authentication state from the extension. Your bookmarks remain on your devices.
  • Account Information: You can view and manage your account information through the Chrome extension or Android app settings.

Security Measures

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted data transmission, secure authentication, and restricted access controls. Our systems are regularly updated to maintain security best practices.

Children's Privacy

Browser Sync is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
